Tophane Clock Tower

The Tophane Clock Tower (Tophane Saat Kulesi) stands in the Tophane district, near the Bosphorus Strait's waterfront. The tower is close to the Tophane Mosque, a prominent landmark. The 19th-century clock tower built during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II is a well-known feature of Istanbul's historical skyline and is close to other historical sites like the Karaköy district and the famous Galata Tower.

On one side is the Nusretiye Mosque, built between 1823 and 1826 during Sultan Mahmud II's reign. This mosque, notable for its unique architectural style, blends Baroque and Ottoman elements. On the other side, Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque, near the Karaköy area and overlooking the Bosphorus, was built in the 16th century, between 1580 and 1587, by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan.

Kılıç Ali Paşa, an admiral in the Ottoman Navy, commissioned the mosque. After his successful military career, he funded this mosque as a form of charitable work and to leave a legacy. He was a formerly enslaved person who rose to power and gave this mosque as a gift to the community.

About the Beyoglu District

The underground cruise terminal sits in the Beyoglu district, which, since the 19th century, has seen its claim to fame, doom and then post-modern revival. Home to Genoese traders in the 15th century, but peaking in the 20th century to be a hub of art and culture, Beyoglu perfectly portrays this multicultural city.

Brimming with boutique shops, famous dessert shops, and street food vendors, at night, it comes alive with pulsating music from the rooftop and pavement bars and clubs. The main artery, Istiklal Avenue, is also full of cultural venues, and the historical texture shines through in French Street, Flower Passage, and the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua. Think of Beyoglu as a lifestyle destination with charm.  (More about Beyoglu in Istanbul.)
