NEWS Turkey’s Dedication to Preserving Gobeklitepe Ancient Ruins for Future Generations

4 Jul 2025

Göbeklitepe, often regarded as the “zero point of history,” has once again captured attention as it marks the seventh anniversary of its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Turkey remains deeply committed to protecting and sharing this ancient treasure with the world.

Minister Ersoy Emphasises Göbeklitepe’s Global Importance

Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, highlighted Göbeklitepe’s universal value in a recent social media post. He underscored the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the site and ensure it is passed down intact to future generations. For Ersoy, Göbeklitepe is not just an archaeological site but a groundbreaking discovery that reshapes human history and challenges previous assumptions.

A Landmark for World Heritage

Being recognised by UNESCO was a proud moment for Turkey, solidifying Göbeklitepe’s place on the global cultural map. Minister Ersoy reflected on how this step marked a confirmation of Turkey’s rich cultural legacy. The Ministry’s Taş Tepeler (Stone Hills) Project, launched in Şanlıurfa during the Republic’s 100th year, aims to deepen scientific research and protect the site for generations to come.

More Than Just an Archaeological Site

The work on Göbeklitepe goes beyond excavation. Coordinated efforts in excavation, protection, promotion, and infrastructure development present the site as a cultural hub where ancient civilizations left their marks. Turkey continues to take a leading role in preserving and sharing this heritage with people worldwide.

Göbeklitepe Shines in Rome’s Colosseum

Göbeklitepe’s influence has reached beyond Turkey’s borders. The exhibition titled “Göbeklitepe: The Mystery of a Sacred Place” at Rome’s iconic Colosseum drew immense interest from the European public. With around 6.5 million visitors, the exhibition successfully reintroduced Göbeklitepe to the international cultural scene.

Scientific Work Moves Forward

Minister Ersoy also noted that the exhibition’s impact wasn’t limited to promotion alone. Scientific excavations and studies continue with the same dedication, not only at Göbeklitepe but throughout the Taş Tepeler region. These efforts ensure that the story of this extraordinary heritage continues to unfold.

Turkey’s steadfast commitment to Göbeklitepe demonstrates the country’s role as a guardian of human history, preserving the past for future generations to appreciate and understand.
