NEWS The number of homes sold in Turkey in January rises by 55.8 per cent compared to last year

Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has announced the statistics on housing sales for January. It was reported that 113,615 houses had been sold in Turkey in January 2020. The number of homes sold in January rose by 55.8 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Accordingly, the number of homes sold in January across the country decreased 43.8 percent compared to the previous month, while the same figure went up to 113,615 by 55.8 percent compared to the same month last year.

In housing sales, Istanbul ranked first with 21,251 houses (18.7 percent) followed by Ankara with 11,989 house sales (11.6 per cent) and Izmir with 7,212 house sales (6.3 per cent).

In this period, mortgage sales increased to 42,237 by 546.1 percent compared to the same month of last year.

The share of mortgage sales in total home sales was 37.2 percent. In mortgage sales, Istanbul ranked first with 7,615 houses and 18 percent share.

Other home sales rose by 7.5 per cent year-on-year in January, to 71,378. In this category, Istanbul ranked first with sales of 13,636 houses and 19.1 percent.

The number of homes sold for the first time in January, increased by 16.1 percent compared to the same month of last year, up to 36,040 units. Within total residential sales, the share of first time sales was 31.7 percent. In this category, Istanbul had the highest share with 6,599 houses followed by Ankara with sales of 3,199 houses and Izmir with sales of 2,219 houses.

Second - hand home sales increased by 85.2 per cent in January compared to the same period last year and amounted to 77,575.

Istanbul ranked first in this area with sales of 14,652 houses and 18.9 percent share. The share of second-hand sales in Istanbul was 68.9 percent of the total residential sales. Istanbul was followed by Ankara with sales of 8,790 houses and Izmir with sales of 4,993.

Home sales to foreigners increased by 23.3 percent in January compared to the same month of last year and became 3,907. Istanbul ranked first in this category with 1875 housing sales, followed by Antalya with 762, Ankara with 235, Bursa with 163 and Yalova with 128.

In January, Iraqi citizens bought 739 houses from Turkey followed by Iranian citizens with 678 units, Russian citizens 254 units, Afghan citizens 204, and Yemeni citizens 142.
